China : From Deqin to Yubeng and back

Our first stop was on the perlgrim route where several stupas oversaw the Meili Snow Mountains in the distance.
We would be staying at the foot of Kang Karpo Peak (covered in clouds here) which is 6,740 meters hight. It is the tallest holy mountain in the Tibetan culture. Thirteen other peaks around it are also over 6 km's tall. From our vantage point, we could also clearly see the Meili glacier. We would be visiting it the next day. And here we are, the next day. After another long climb, we reached a look out point where we could admire this glacier.
It's quite dirty though, just like everything else here.
There were some houses behind our guesthouse. It was as if this place had fallen in dispair, but thanks to satellite television, the villagers were barely able to hang on.
The contrast couldn't be any bigger. I've always wondered if the poster on the wall had anything to do with birth control.
Though I must add that the one child per family does not apply to minorities that live out in the country. Because they are so poor, having more then one child is usually their only social security net. After the glaciers, it was time for a drink..
After a drink, it was time for some food.. After some food, it was time to pack up and leave.. To get to Yubeng, we would first have to hitch a ride on a tractor
Terras farming next to the Mekong river It was getting late, so we stopped at a guesthouse before continueing to Yubeng. The next leg of our trip would be on foot.
The living room had a beautiful budhist shrine Everywhere we went, we were served tea. The times are clearly changing
Our hostess was really friendly. Here she is posing in her kitchen. The chinees don't really have a concept of night life. A succesful night out for them is a karaoke evening. So far, we had succesfully managed to escape from having to participate. But our hostess had found a CD with English songs and text and felt it was only right that we too should enjoy such forbidden pleasures.
We couldn't sing but we did have blast. The next day. We had to hike up another mountain before descending again. By now, I was starting to get used to it. This was the the top.
